Linking is an ongoing relationship between two groups of people, usually in different countries, who communicate and do things together, founded on trust for mutual benefit. The aim of this Programme is to increase understanding of global development issues. It offers funding and support to community groups in the UK that have a link with a community group in a developing country.
There are two types of Community Linking grants as follows:
* £1,000 to a maximum £2,000 to be spent over a four month period.
* £7,000 to a maximum of £10,000 to be spent over a nine month period.
Global Community Links can assist with the following:
* Understanding more about global development issues.
* Making connections between the applicant's community and others.
* Exploring how global issues have a local impact.
Community groups within the UK that are in touch with a community group in a developing country are eligible to apply.
The next deadline for application is 1 September 2010.

Good news! Once again Voluntary Action Oldham is administering a pot of funding from the Oldham Partnership.
The aim of "Oldham Community Grants Scheme” is to help support a range of exciting activities and projects, inspired and run by people from across the Oldham borough. The fund hopes to encourage people to get involved in making a difference to their communities by turning their bright ideas into reality.
Last year 30 grants were awarded and the projects ranged from a Badminton group, a writing café, a summer event and an end of year social.
With the maximum grant this year being £2,500 we are focusing on new groups, those just coming into existence, or smaller groups with total funds of less than £20,000 at their disposal during this financial year.
This year groups must aim to address one or more of the following key ‘topic' areas:
· Increase the feeling of safety in neighbourhoods and amongst neighbours
· Help people to develop new skills and confidence so that they can take up new opportunities and increase their life chances.
· Promote sustainability - improve the look of the local environment or make public spaces greener or, encourage awareness of sustainable living e.g. recycling, food growing, and effective use of resources.
· Promote health and wellbeing amongst adults in our communities.
Priority will be given to small, locally based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community and are able to demonstrate that they are addressing these.
Projects should demonstrate how they will contribute to one or more of the priorities above.
The closing date for applications is Friday 3rd September 2010 at 12noon and if you are successful in securing a grant then all grant monies must be spent, monitored, and reported back to us by February 28th 2011.

"We are very serious about the Big Society and the voluntary and community sector is at the heart of it, but we are all trying to do more with less and we are all trying to seek efficiencies” Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society
What is the Big Society?
The Big Society is the Government’s vision to empower local people and communities. David Cameron said it is a serious reform "to take power away from politicians and give it to people”. The coalition government says that the third sector has a key role to play. Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office: "We will give more power to charities and social enterprise and the individuals they serve.”
Visit www.gmvss.net/bigsociety for more information of what is happening so far, the government priorities affecting the third sector and a summary of the governments policies and the budget announced in June 2010 with its impact on the sector.

As you may now be aware, the Government has announced their intention to remodel the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) back to proportionate, common sense levels. As a result, the ISA registration phase of the scheme has now been stopped and therefore will not launch on 26 July 2010.
Although the full details and scope of this remodel are still to be finalised:
- it is business as usual for the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB);
- the elements of the VBS put in place back in October 2009 continue; and
- existing requirements concerning CRB will remain in place, and those entitled to such checks can continue to apply for them.
The CRB has put together a FAQs list of questions you may have in relation to the interim arrangements.
Please visit their website for more details: (http://www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk/faqs/interim_application_process.aspx)
